The new Birmingham Sunday Social Netball League season got underway at Coleshill Leisure Centre, with teams taking to the court for the opening round of fixtures. Players of all experience levels were in action as the league returned for another season, and the opening night provided a competitive start across all three matches.
The A Team 16–2 Netbusters
The A Team began their season with a convincing 16–2 victory over Netbusters. From the opening centre pass, The A Team settled into the game well and produced a disciplined performance at both ends of the court.
Their defensive pressure limited scoring opportunities for Netbusters, while their attacking unit converted chances consistently throughout the match. Netbusters continued to work hard and showed good determination despite the scoreline, but The A Team maintained control for much of the contest to secure the win.
Wingin It 23–2 Falcons
Wingin It recorded the highest score of the evening, defeating Falcons 23–2.
Wingin It moved the ball effectively through the court and capitalised on their opportunities in the shooting circle to build an early advantage. Falcons continued to compete throughout the game and showed good effort in both attack and defence, but Wingin It remained in control and finished with a comfortable victory.
The match was played in good spirits, with both teams demonstrating the positive attitude and sportsmanship that are central to the league.
Goal Diggers 18–5 Hot Shots
The final fixture of the evening saw Goal Diggers take on Hot Shots, with Goal Diggers coming away with an 18–5 win.
Both teams produced some good passages of netball, particularly through the middle third of the court. Goal Diggers were able to create and convert more scoring opportunities across the game, allowing them to gradually extend their lead. Hot Shots continued to battle throughout and will look to build on the positives from their opening fixture as the season progresses.
The Week 1 Most Valued Player award goes to Cat Millichamp of The A Team.
Cat played an important role in her side's opening victory, making a strong contribution throughout the match. Her movement, energy and consistency across the court helped her team maintain their intensity from start to finish and earned her recognition as the league's first MVP of the season.
The opening night provided a solid start to the new season, with teams showing plenty of commitment and enthusiasm despite it being the first round of fixtures. While some sides made strong starts with convincing wins, all teams will have taken positives from their performances and will be looking to improve as the season develops.
With the first set of results now on the board, attention turns to Week 2, where teams will have another opportunity to build momentum and climb the league table.
